Wildwood Outfitters Blog and Fishing Report
The fly fishing bucket list brings anglers to exotic and remote locations: Belize, Alaska, Montana, and...Western Pennsylvania? At first glance one of those destinations is not like the others, so why do fly fishers from all over the country flock to the Keystone State in search of trout and steelhead? One of the things anglers covet is waterway diversity, and this is where Pennsylvania really excels. From sprawling tailwaters to tiny mountain brooks, PA has it all! It's the wide array of fishable trout water that brings folks here from across the country. This variety isn't just confined to one part of the state, either. Our local waters range from wide trout streams where anglers can really work on some long casts to small trickles home to native brook trout. The diversity also carries over into the fish species that we can target in Western Pennsylvania. Wild brown and native brook trout are present in numerous waterways in the area, as are stocked trout. A lifetime could be spent exploring and learning all of the trout waters in our little corner of the state. Aside from trout, we are incredibly lucky to have a tremendous steelhead fishery centered around the Lake Erie tributaries. These amazing sport fish, though native to the Pacific Northwest, travel inland to the Pennsylvania Northwest in the fall and stick around through the early spring season. As icing on the cake, our part of Pennsylvania is spoiled with natural beauty. Rolling hills, quaint farmland, lush forests, and glacial boulder fields accentuate the trout waters that flow through this outer rim of the Allegheny Plateau. The chance to fly fish in the presence of such splendor brings people back for more just as much as the fish that find their way into our nets! Strong trout populations, diversity in water and fish species, and the breathtaking scenery are what brings anglers here and keeps them coming back for more. When groups of friends get together to decide what destination will be next on the bucket list for fishing trips, it's no wonder that Northwest Pennsylvania is becoming an increasingly popular location! Ask about how we can help make Western Pennsylvania the fishing destination you've been looking for!
