Winter steelhead in PA.
​The 2023 season is right around the corner, and even though we're in the middle of the winter steelhead season,
+
before you know it the spring thaw will arrive and with it a whole new exciting set of adventures to take!  If you're thinking about taking a trip with us in 2023, or you already have one scheduled, let's talk about what's in store for coming year. 

We typically assume that February is filled with locked up streams and limited fishing opportunities, so we don't schedule trips during this time.  Some folks stay on a short-notice call list just in case conditions allow for a trip or two, but by and large it's an off-time.  It's a short-lived pause, however.  Once March arrives the ice melts, swelling the Lake Erie tributaries and bringing back our steelhead trips in both PA and OH!  We'll be busy squeezing every ounce out of the run until the middle of April, when trout take center stage.
In April, May, and early June our time will be spent on the northwest PA trout streams chasing hatches while brooks, browns, and rainbows happily feed on them!  We'll start these trips fighting off chilly mornings and snow, but end wearing short sleeves and enjoying the beautiful May weather that almost makes one forget about the frozen rod guides and biting cold of steelhead season.  Once June arrives we'll spend a few weeks in central PA and some of the fabled trout streams there, until the heat creates unsafe water temperatures to successfully catch and release a trout.  This dry-dropper season is glorious, albeit far too short! 

The heat of mid-summer shuts things down again but we'll be anxiously eyeing fall rains and cooler temperatures to get back on the PA steelhead tribs and the annual run of fish that brings in anglers from across the country.  Fleece layers will be pulled back out of retirement as fall fades to winter and reel-screaming runs and powerful steelhead head shakes fill our days. 

Diversity is what makes Pennsylvania truly special for anglers, and it's what makes our guide trips so darn fun!  The opportunity to share that with our folks is incredibly rewarding, and the ability to transition from mayfly-sipping brown trout to ravenous brook trout to surly steelhead makes our trips truly unique in the fly fishing world.  Want proof?  Come on out and fish with us in 2023 and we'll show you exactly what we mean!

Steelhead fishing in Pennsylvania
What's it like fishing in the wind, you ask?  What about rain, or snow?  Maybe sunshine is your more your speed?  Depending on the day, our anglers have dealt with it all lately!  The weather has been a little funky, and that has made certain days tougher than others, but we're still putting some quality fish in the net.  Some of the steelhead are starting to spawn, and there are quite a few fish visibly on redds.   We steer clear of these ones, but it's quite amazing to watch nature at work!
The tribs could certainly use a shot of rain to boost the flow, and the low water has turned things a bit technical as of late.  Dropping down in fly size, as well as tippet size, has been important as the fish become more wary in conditions like this.  Additionally, the warm weather has led to heavy crowds, leading to even spookier fish.  Finding steelhead in little pockets is a great way to combat situations like this since most anglers walk right past these areas.  If the streams continue to drop in flow, which they will until the next measurable rain comes through, look for fish to congregate more in the deepest sections of streams.  The weather is usually an adventure in Erie, and this season is certainly no exception!

Central PA trout guides.

​Fishing has been fantastic over the last couple weeks!  We've had some steady rains, which has made for a few tricky days, but overall the stream levels and water temperatures have been terrific.  Not only that, but some of our strongest hatches have been a bit later than usual.  That's okay, though!  Sulphurs and drakes are still popping off here at a time when we would normally be transitioning to terrestrials.  Trips are enjoying some nice dry fly action to go along with the usual nymph routine. 
Even though water temps and levels are still solid, fish are naturally starting to congregate in some of the deeper areas.  This is always a trend we see in summer as flows get lower compared to April and May, and the trout become more susceptible to predators, chiefly birds of prey. Dropping down a few extra feet in the water gives them a bit more of a shield, as well as a shot in the arm from cooler water.  The 10-day forecast looks pretty darn tame, but water temperature is something our trips, and all anglers, should start to monitor.  The early mornings will be the best bet to avoid unsafe temperatures and cloudy/rainy days will be preferred over the bright sun.  Once the streams hit 63-65 degrees, anglers should consider using heavier tippet and avoid handling the fish for any longer than necessary.  The streams hitting 68+ degrees usually means it's time to hang it up for the day!

Guided fly fishing trips in Western Pennsylvania.
We've been awfully busy lately!  Our trout trips in NW PA are rolling right along, and with them, some great fish.  It's been a weird spring in this neck of the woods, with 80-degree days and snowstorms seemingly taking turns every week.  That has made the hatches a bit unpredictable, but things are starting to stabilize and return to normal.  Most of our action is on triple nymph rigs, but every so often we are getting the chance to toss some dry flies when the caddis cooperate!
Typically we don't have too many conversations about stream conditions during trout season.  Even when the water is high, smaller streams offer refuge for our trips and most of the larger waterways run off fairly quickly.  However, as noted above, this spring has been different in terms of precipitation.  Consistent big rains have left the waters swollen and really made things interesting over the last several weeks!  The good news is that the fish don't seem to mind and continue to actively feed in all sorts of water types.

Ohio guided steelhead trips.
Our steelhead season has come to a close!  It was a terrific spring run in Ohio, and our trips had a blast taking advantage of fishing in such beautiful weather. There are still plenty of fish in the tribs, but the run is starting to drop off.  If you make the trip over there for some last chance fish, be prepared to also catch some suckers and maybe even a smallmouth.  Egg patterns will continue to produce fish, as will stonefly and caddis imitations. Streamers can be a good bet, too. 
As we pivot from steelhead back to trout in NW Pennsylvania, the weather has been a major factor in stream conditions.  At the current moment we are getting hammered with a few inches of snow, but the forecast moving forward looks a whole lot more manageable!  The return of normal temperatures should make for some steady fishing in the weeks to come.  We're also inching closer to our best local bug hatch, the Grannom Caddis.  Keep an eye out for them, and it's wise to make sure every nymph rig has some sort of caddis imitation on it for the next month or so.  

Hatches have been sparse as of late, mostly due to the up-and-down weather.  With that said, nymphing is always going to be more productive this time of year.  Water levels have been mostly up, but that has spread fish out nicely and created opportunities in all sorts of water types!  Riffles that are sometimes too shallow are all of a sudden prime feeding lies, and the deeper holes are providing trout refuge from the fast currents.  Leave no spot unfished and thoroughly cover everything before moving on.  You'll be surprised at where trout are holding right now, and those "bonus" fish are always a nice addition to the day's tally!

We've been spending the last few weeks working the Ohio tribs for steelhead, and the action has been pretty darn steady!  Volatile weather has made things a bit interesting with stream flows, but when it cooperates the fish are there and very willing.  The most difficult aspect of these trips has probably been folks trying to pack the appropriate clothing! We've been steelheading in 70 degrees, snow, rain, wind, and just about everything in between but such is to be expected during March in the Great Lakes!  For folks looking to get out, keep monitoring the stream gauges to time things up appropriately.

The fairly constant high water of March has posed a few challenges, but it's also brought in fresh fish continuously.  There is a nice mix of fresh/dark steelhead and that makes each catch a little unique!  Try to avoid fishing the fish visible on spawning redds as much as possible.  These steelhead are actively paired up and spawning, and even though natural reproduction is low, it's still a good habit to practice!  Finding the combination of faster current and depth has been the key to success over the last few weeks.  These fish are either paused on their migration run, or holding in a feeding lie, both of which make them prime targets for a nymph rig.

Is it spring?  Is it winter?  Is it both...all in the same day?  You never know what March will bring, and we've had some crazy shifts in weather over the last few weeks.  It's always one of the more volatile months, and this year has been no different.  Timing trips up in the productive weather windows has been important, and the fish have cooperated nicely when we've had a chance to get out!  Since ice-out our trips have been focused on the PA tribs, but that's about to change for the next several weeks.  With each high water event more and more fish are coming into the Ohio waters, making it prime time in the Buckeye State!
The PA tribs have been fishing well, but there's been a noticeable downtick in numbers of fish in the drainages.  That's just the way things go this time of year, as the steelhead will begin to make their way back out to the big water of Lake Erie for the summer.  There are certainly plenty of fish to be had, and it's possible to have a great day, but moving forward the total numbers will continue to shrink.  As another important note, the PFBC has started stocking smolt in the PA waters, so take extra special care of them when caught.  They will be the adults we catch in seasons to come, so keeping them happy and healthy is crucial for the continuation of our tremendous fishery!   As a general rule, if you catch a few in one spot you can bet there are hundreds in the area, so it's sometimes wise to move on to a new stretch to avoid catching dozens of the juvenile steelhead.
