Wildwood Outfitters Blog and Fishing Report
It's possibly the question we are asked the most. There are flights to book, vacation time to request, and a million other logistics to plan. Folks want to book a trip, but are just unsure what time of year might be most suitable. The answer to "when is best" is part of what makes western Pennsylvania such a tremendous fly fishing destination! Spring The unofficial "start" of trout season! Even though we go after trout all year, spring is when anglers shake off the cold of winter and head back out onto the streams. It's also a great time to target steelhead, specifically in Ohio. The weather can be a challenge, especially in March and early April, but there's no rain or cold that can stop us from having a great time chasing trout and steelhead! Some of the biggest fish of the year show themselves in these rainy months and it refreshes the soul to buck cabin fever and get back out into nature. Summer Ah, wet wading season! As we ditch the waders, trout fishing really starts to round into form. Steelhead are long gone, and our local streams shine when the days are longest. The months of May, June, and July are some of the most productive, and most enjoyable to be out fishing. Hatches pour off, trout feed happily, and we catch plenty of trout from the home streams of Venango County to the fabled waters of central PA! Fall Now this is the stuff that everyone wants to be part of. When temperatures drop into sweatshirt territory, but not cold, and the leaves begin to change it's only natural for folks to flock to the nearest body of water. Steelhead start to enter the Pennsylvania tributaries and trout are ferociously feeding in an attempt to bulk up for the coming winter. Brook and brown trout both adorn magnificent spawning colors and provide some of the most fantastic fishing of the year! Winter The relative calm and serenity of winter fishing is refreshing. There's something wonderful about warming our hands after landing a nice steelhead as the snow gently falls that brings us out in even the harshest of conditions. It's also during these months the biggest PA steelhead find their way into our nets. If it's peace and a lack of crowds your're after, winter is the time! Curious about more details for a spring, summer, fall, or winter trip? Send us an email and let's talk about it! We can get into specifics about exactly what your day on the water might look like.
