Wildwood Outfitters Blog and Fishing Report
The steelhead action on the PA tribs has been outstanding lately! Consistent rains have moved the fish throughout the drainages and they have been holding in everything from deeper pools to shallow riffles. A nice mix of fresh and colored-up fish have been caught which makes for some nice variety on our trips. Unseasonably warm temperatures last week brought some heavy crowds to the streams, but chilly mornings should thin them out a bit moving forward. Steady rains once or twice a week should keep the action rolling for the foreseeable future! Almost all of our fish have been caught on nymph rigs, with stoneflies, egg patterns, and a few caddis nymphs being the most productive selections. Typically by now we're starting to keep on eye on nightly low temperatures to monitor for ice forming on the streams during the morning hours, but that hasn't been a concern as of yet. Veteran steelhead anglers know battling the ice and slush can be tiresome, so this is a very welcome change of pace from other seasons where cold weather moves in early and brings those conditions with it. Anglers looking to make the trip up to Erie should continue in their fall/early winter routine of monitoring rain events and the USGS stream gauges to pick and choose what locations to fish. There will be a few more fresh fish continue to push in after each rain, but the bulk of the run is already in the streams so there won't be the massive surge of fish that is sometimes seen earlier in the year. As a note, keep an eye out for redds while walking the streams! These shallow, almost divot-like depressions are areas where females deposit eggs and cover them back up after males fertilize them. Even though natural reproduction on the Erie tribs is limited, help do your part to protect the spawning fish by avoiding fish for them and steering clear of the redds when moving through the water.
