The next few weeks are some of the most anticipated of the entire season. Sulphurs and green drakes dominate our pursuits and trout attacking giant dry flies fill our dreams! The streams of central PA are in their glory right now, with bugs hatching all day and fish coming up to eat them. Recent heavy rains have ensured that there will be no early season drought, and water levels are fantastic for this time of year. Guide trips in both western and central PA have been reporting monster numbers lately, and that should continue throughout the month! Some favorite flies this week:
Viewing rain as our friend, for a moment, leads us to explore what it does to trout streams. During this time of year, rain cools the water temperatures and provides much needed relief for the fish. They are able to move around throughout watersheds and feed on the influx of bugs that come out during rain events. Rain also staves off drought conditions that result in low water and stressed trout. This much rain in late May and early June will pay major dividends throughout the summer!
