The steelhead are currently bouncing back and forth between their fall and winter holding areas. Some days they're found in good numbers throughout shallower riffles, but the deepest holes are always a safe bet to find fish. Egg patterns have been the top-producing flies, as per the usual for Erie, but fish are also being caught on caddis and stonefly imitations. One of the best parts of the winter steelhead season is the diversity of fish found in the drainages. There's a good mix of fresh and colored-up steelhead, which makes for some really cool and unique colorations! Another factor that's really working in our favor right now is the air temperature. There hasn't been the slightest hint of ice on the streams yet, and with the forecast showing lows in the 20s and 30s, ice shouldn't be something we have to concern ourselves with for at least a few more weeks. As December marches on that becomes an increasing concern, and even more so into January, but for the time being everything is looking great on the Erie tributaries!
