Recent Trip Report

It rained over a half an inch a few hours before Liam's trip, but this big brown didn't seem to mind!

July has been interesting this year, with temperatures looking like they might go down as the hottest on record.  Some trips had to be moved or cancelled because of unsafe water temps, but there have been a few windows of opportunity our guests have taken advantage of!   They key has been monitoring both water and air temperatures along with much-needed rain and capitalizing on those chances when trout can be safely targeted and caught without too much undo stress. 

Pierce visited from Virginia to find some cool water earlier this month and he was not disappointed!

Another aspect of responsible fishing right now is to know which trout to leave alone and which can be safely pursued.  There are pods of fish that will congregate at the mouth of cool-water refuges, and it will almost look like the fish are piled right on top of each other in a small space.  This is the classic indication that trout are stressed and they should be left alone, since any caught fish will likely perish from the stress.  One way to combat this is to fish the headwater streams where temps are cooler, but also plan to fish right after a rain or when nightly low dip into the 50's.  A few recent trips have gone out just a couple hours after heavy rains and that bump in water flow and drop in water temp has led to some outstanding action!
