The allure of finding trout in beautiful places drives anglers to explore remote areas all over the globe. Serene backdrops with trout so innocently naive to human existence it almost hurts drive fly fishers to explore these far away waters. Backcountry streams and lakes are the stuff of fly fishing dreams, and those dreams become reality with fly fishing guide and blogger Katie Burgert of Fish Untamed. 

For fly fishers pursuing trout in the backcountry, Colorado is at or near the top of everyone's list.  To Katie, it is the perfect place to lead trips into Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) in search of gorgeous trout.  She has taken folks into the wilds of RMNP for the last four summers, and that experience has made her both passionate and knowledgeable on fishing for trout in the backcountry.

Long before Katie was leading backpacking trips in Colorado national parks, she was fishing Pennsylvania rivers.  Smallmouth bass, her favorite fish, speak to her angling youth and after a few days getting skunked each catch was exciting!   "They're just so much fun to catch, and also have that nostalgic value that never gets old."  It's this foundation, and the subsequent experiences gained as a guide in CO, that led her to launch the website and blog Fish Untamed in April of 2018. 

A trip to Katie's website is a journey into the thoughts and musings of an industry expert. There's tips on topics like lightning safety and altitude sickness along with how to catch more trout in small streams. There's most assuredly something for everyone on Fish Untamed regardless of what waters you call home! 

It's not just about the fish for Katie, but also about the wondrous places they live.  Conservation is a word that's thrown around a lot in the fly fishing community, but it's refreshing to see it in action.  In 2017 Katie was part of an effort to raise money for conservation through the Lake Fork Flyathlon, which has raised over $100,000 since its creation. There's also an entire category on Fish Untamed dedicated to conservation and public land blogs, which are two subjects that matter a great deal to us as well!
