Fly Fishing Friends Friday

Katherine Chenoweth

Long gone are the days where outdoorsmen and women sat back and let others fight their conservation battles for them.  Whether that fight is waged in Congress or or on the trout stream, it couldn't be successful without the support of the fly fishing community.  That's on full display with Katherine Chenoweth of Wading Water, a California-based company that donates 10% of their proceeds to CalTrout. 

"Fly fishing is where I regain my sanity. To be able to go out and experience where fly fishing takes me, and to be able to go out with my husband and enjoy each other's company while doing something that we both love:  that's our reality."

In the age of mass-produced goods, it's sometimes difficult to find quality items.  That's not the case with Wading Waters, as their handmade outdoor gear is both functional and fashionable!  The hats and bracelets that Katherine produces are more than just another piece of gear, however.  She proudly donates 10% of every sale to CalTrout, an organization committed to ensuring wild fish have a home in healthy waters in the state of California. 

​Katherine began fly fishing in the summer of 2016, and it's taken off from a hobby to a way to inspire others and get involved in the greater conservation community.  In the same way that we love to catch brook trout in their native home, her favorite fish to go after is the Barred Surf Perch, a fish native to California. 

"Fishing for Surf Perch is what I grew up knowing, and even though fly fishing for them can be tough it makes it rewarding when you finally get a chance to fight one!"

While she isn't aiming to make it a full-time job,  if she encourages another person to try it thanks to her work or Instagram posts then that's worth it!
