First Of Many

​Sending human beings to the moon, the tearing down of the Berlin Wall, and the start of this blog. Let's call those the most important events in the last 50 some years, shall we? Maybe that's a little overblown...but today marks the first day of the rest of the Internet's life. No more can it be said that a blog by Nick DelVecchio doesn't exist. My goal and hope is that this will be a written compendium of the tomfoolery, realness, and beauty that I find on my outdoor adventures. 

I've heard the question "why do you like the outdoors so much" more times than I can remember, and when faced with this question there are two possible avenues to respond with. The first is some cliche stock response about the beauty, solitude, peacefulness, fun, etc. to be found outdoors while the second is digging into the almost spiritual overtones that can found in the rhythms of a trout stream.  See what I mean? Spiritual overtones and rhythms of a trout stream isn't exactly something that resonates with the crowd that doesn't already fly fish. Talking about getting back to hunter gatherer roots and oneness with nature while archery hunting doesn't strike the appropriate chord. 

​In an attempt to deviate from these two avenues, I created this blog. The posts might be funny, they might be sad. They may read like a fishing report, they may never mention the fish at all. There's no telling where the posts will go but each one will reveal another piece to the puzzle as to why the outdoors is such a powerful mechanism in my life.  An activity that turns into a true passion is something done in the best of times as well as the worst of times. It's something that can provide both comfort and peace. There are so few things out there where "in the moment" of the activity my mind doesn't wander somewhere else, but the second that trout hits or the first heart pounding moment you see that deer the world is operating in a cocoon. Nothing else is happening except what is actually happening.  Let me stop, because I can feel the previous mentioned spiritualism and sappiness that's just as likely to leave you with glazed over eyes as it is interest you in the rest of my works. 

So maybe this compendium won't go down in the annals of history in the same breath as the Normandy Invasion or the vaccine for polio, but it's here and it'll continue come hell or high water (puns ALWAYS intended.) I hope you enjoy the stories as they will span hunting and fishing across the country. ​
