The local streams have seen incredibly strong Grannom Caddis hatches the last few weeks and the fish have been responding favorably to them. Even on the "slow" days anglers have been experiencing a mix of caddis and midge action as well as the occasional stonefly.
Elizabeth braved some rain and was rewarded with plenty of fish!
In terms of flies to use, grannom dries have been producing as have cutters caddis in dark gray. Pat's Rubber Legs in a size #16 are consistently the point fly of choice on nymph rigs and Anato-may's in both olive and deep red round out the most successful fly choices of the last few weeks.
As we get further into May the grannoms will subside and some mayflies will become the dominant bug. It's about that time that the streams in Central PA will really come into form with blanket hatches including the fabled Green Drake. Folks take vacation and sick days to chase these bugs and the big fish that come from the depths to pick off the protein-packed snacks.
